STOCKTON, Calif. - Fresh off its opening-round victory over San Francisco, No. 3 seed San Diego's bats stayed red hot with a 22-8 victory over No. 2 seed Portland on Thursday in the WCC Baseball Tournament from Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton.
The Toreros picked up the win with a six-run second inning, a four-run fifth inning and a seven-run seventh inning. Camden Vasquez paced San Diego with three hits, while seven Toreros totaled earned multi-hit games.
USD broke the game open in the second inning with six runs. After homering twice against the Dons the day before, WCC Player of the Year Caleb Rickets blasted a two-run homer off Gillis. San Diego slapped two ensuing RBI doubles in the third and fourth to take the 10-run lead.
Ricketts and RJ Teijeiro eached homered and produced four RBI for USD.
The Pilots produced a three-run fifth inning and a four-run sixth to try to claw back into it. Jake Holcroft and Evan Scavotto each notched three hits for Portland.
San Diego faces No. 1 Gonzaga on Friday at approximately 3:30 p.m. Portland gets its chance to redeem itself in an elimination game against No. 5 LMU in the first game of Friday's tripleheader at noon.
