San Diego Wins 2022 WCC Baseball Championship

STOCKTON, Calif. - Battling into extra innings, San Diego smack two home runs in the 11th inning to win the 2022 WCC Baseball Championship, 15-12, Saturday afternoon from Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, Calif.

The Toreros won the WCC Baseball Tournament for the second time in program history on Saturday. USD won the first Conference tournament in 2013.

Tied at 12 in the 11th, Jack Costello belted one to left to give USD a one-run lead before Cody Jefferis slugged a two-run shot to right, putting the Toreros up by three.

The tournament's Most Outstanding Player, Caleb Ricketts continued on his tear throughout the tournament on Saturday, going 3-for-5 with two RBI, two runs and a double.

The back-and-forth slugfest kickstarted in the first when USD posted two runs in the opening frame before Gonzaga jumped out to a 5-2 lead thanks to a three-run homer by Grayson Sterling.

Needing to win twice on Saturday to claim the Conference title, Gonzaga led, 10-6, heading into the eighth inning when the tide turned. The Toreros posted a six-run rally in the eighth off of an RBI double, three RBI singles and a fielder's choice.

The Zags answered, though, with a Cade McGee homer in the bottom of the eighth. In the bottom of the ninth, Ezra Samperi's RBI single to left tied the game and sent it into extras.

With the Conference tournament championship, the Toreros earned the automatic qualifier into the NCAA Baseball Tournament. The NCAA Baseball Tournament Selection show will air on Monday at 9 a.m. PT.
