LAS VEGAS - A pair of home runs helped push No. 3 Santa Clara past No. 6 Gonzaga, 4-2, in the first round of the 2023 West Coast Conference Baseball Tournament from Las Vegas Ballpark.
Coleman Brigman scored the first runs of the game and the tournament with his two-run shot to right field in the bottom of the fourth. Later in the bottom of the seventh, Ben Steck added an insurance run with a blast to straight away center.
In the top of the 8th, Gonzaga got back into the game with two runs in the eighth inning. Sam Stem singled to center, scoring Connor Coballes before a fielder's choice plated Brian Kalmer to cut the deficit down to one.
Brigman notched his third RBI of the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth.
SCU's Eamonn Lance doubled twice in the win and Efrain Manzo collected three hits.
Owen Wild went seven and a third for the Zags, striking out seven Broncos.
Santa Clara will play No. 2 seed Portland tomorrow at 7:20 p.m.
