SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – After capturing the 2024 West Coast Conference Baseball Regular Season title, San Diego claimed four of the five major individual awards and placed four on the 2024 All-WCC First Team as announced the 2024 WCC Baseball All-Conference honors were announced by the league office on Tuesday. The Toreros (37-13, 20-4 WCC) enter this week's WCC Baseball Tournament as the No. 1 seed.
USD major award winners were WCC Player of the Year Jakob Christian, Defensive Player of the Year Ariel Armas, Freshman of the Year Logan Reddemann and Brock Ungricht was selected by his peers as WCC Coach of the Year. Portland's Carter Gaston was named the WCC Pitcher of the Year.
All five individual awards – along with the All-West Coast Conference First, Second and Freshman Teams – were voted on solely by the league’s nine head coaches.
Christian currently ranks No. 10 in the nation in slugging percentage (.822). He ended the regular season tied for the league lead in home runs with 22. He is the first Torero to win WCC Player of the Year since Caleb Ricketts in 2022 and Thomas Luevano in 2021.
Ungricht has the Toreros in this week's WCC Baseball Tournament as the No. 1 seed after concluding the regular season winning 26 of the last 29 games and nine of their last 10. USD swept the last four WCC series the Toreros competed in and compiled an 18-9 record in road games. The last time a USD coach won WCC Coach of the Year was Rich Hill in 2015.
Gaston became just the second Portland pitcher to win WCC Pitcher of the Year honors (Brett Gillis, 2022). He led the WCC in wins in Conference games (8) and put an exclamation mark on his 2024 season with a complete game shutout in the final weekend of the regular season, winning Rawlings WCC Pitcher of the Week accolades in the process. He ended the campaign with an ERA of 2.38, 63 strikeouts and two saves.
Reddemann claimed Freshman of the Year honors after posting a 3.48 earned run average with a 1.29 WHIP and a 7-3 record in 13 appearances. He struck out 57 batters he faced. He won Rawlings WCC Pitcher of the Week on two occasions. He is the first USD player to win WCC Freshman of the Year since Bryson Brigman in 2015.
Armas was stellar defensively all year for USD. He boasted a .998 fielding percentage, collecting 481 putouts with only one error. The catcher threw out runners trying to steal on 13 occasions. He is the first Torero to ever win WCC Defensive Player of the Year.
Three All-WCC First Team honorees - Christian Almanza (Saint Mary's), Jake Holcroft (Portland) and Coleman Schmidt (Saint Mary's) picked up all-conference first team accolades after previously being named to the 2024 All-WCC Preseason Team. Almanza and Nick Brink (Portland) earned All-WCC First Team recognition for the second straight year, while Holcroft picked up the honor for the third straight season.
