2024 WCC Baseball Tournament Preview

The 2024 WCC Baseball Tournament runs from May 22-25 at Las Vegas Ballpark in Las Vegas, Nev. eight of the nine possible tournament games can be seen on ESPN+. The championship game on Saturday, May 25, will be seen on ESPNU at 1 p.m. Five of the six teams in the field return after playing in last year's tournament - San Diego, Portland, Saint Mary's, Gonzaga and Santa Clara. Pepperdine returns to the Conference tournament in 2024. 

This is the third year of the current format for the WCC Baseball Tournament. Six teams qualified for the tournament, with the first day's action being single elimination before returning to the double-elimination format on the second day. 

Regular Season champion San Diego is the No. 1 seed in the tournament after clinching the regular season title. The Toreros concluded the regular season having won 26 of their last 29 games, including nine of their last 10 and four straight WCC series sweeps. USD's Jakob Christian proved to be one of the WCC's top power hitters this season, tying for the league lead in home runs with 22, and ranking 10th in the nation in slugging percentage (.822). 

The Toreros claimed four of the five major awards in the 2024 WCC Baseball All-Conference honors. Christian won WCC Player of the Year, while his head coach Brock Ungricht won WCC Coach of the Year. Fellow Toreros Logan Reddemann won WCC Freshman of the Year and Ariel Armas won WCC Defensive Player of the Year. Portland's Carter Gaston won WCC Pitcher of the Year.  

Portland heads to Las Vegas as the No. 2 seed after sweeping Saint Mary's last weekend in the battle for second. The Pilots are unbeaten in the month of May, having won their last 11 games in a row. Nick Brink has been stellar all season on the mound. He leads the WCC and ranks No. 7 in the nation in strikeouts with 117. Carter Gaston's 11 wins this season are a single-season program best for the Pilots, and he won eight games in league play.  

Strong at the plate all year, No. 3 seed Saint Mary's leads the WCC with a .521 slugging percentage. The Gaels also rank second the WCC in battiing average at .295. The 2023 WCC Player of the Year Christian Almanza tied USD's Christian in home runs this season with 22. SMC plays Pepperdine in the first round, a team they swept during the regular season.  

No. 4 seed Gonzaga has competed in every WCC Tournament except for one since the tournament started in 2013, including the last seven in a row. Head Coach Mark Machtolf has 596 career wins, needing four to reach the 600 win mark. The Bulldogs will face Santa Clara in the first round, a team they swept during the regular season. 

No. 5 seed and defending tournament champion Santa Clara heads into the Conference tournament having won five of its last seven, including taking two out of three in the final regular season series against Pacific. JonJon Berring, a key piece from the Broncos' championship squad a year ago, ranks fifth in the WCC in stolen bases (15-of-18), seventh in on-base percentage (.448) and eighth in batting average (.327). 

Punching its ticket to the WCC Tournament on the final weekend of the regular season, Pepperdine swept Gonzaga last weekend to sneak past LMU for the final spot. The Waves are the only WCC teams to win two straight WCC Baseball Tournaments, having won it in 2014 and 2015. Brady Renck ranks second in the WCC with 5 triples on the year, one fewer than Coleman Schmidt of Saint Mary's.
