No. 1 San Diego Tops No. 4 Gonzaga

LAS VEGAS - Top-seeded San Diego boasted a five-run sixth inning that propelled the Toreros past No. 4 seed Gonzaga, 10-7, in the second round of the 2024 West Coast Conference Baseball Tournament at Las Vegas Ballpark.

With the win, the Toreros move into the winners bracket, while the Bulldogs will play in an elimination game on Friday at noon.

Prior to the sixth inning, the Bulldogs were hanging tough against USD. The game broke open with a five-run USD rally in the bottom of the sixth. Austin Smith smacked a two-run single before Ariel Armas slugged an RBI double and Jack Costello topped off the ralley with another two-run single, making it 9-3, USD.

Gonzaga got on the board first with a sacrifice fly in the third off the bat of Hudson Shupe that scored Payton Knowles. USD answered in the bottom of the third when Jakob Christian slugged a two-run homer to right, putting the Toreros up, 2-1.

Donovan Ratfield tied in the game in the top of the fourth with an RBI double down the left field line that scored Tommy Eisenstat all the way from first.

Back-to-back Gonzaga errors in the bottom of the fourth proved to be costly when Angelo Peraza ripped a two-run single to left, putting USD back up, 4-2.

Gonzaga got one back in the top of the sixth thanks to an RBI single by Jordan Hamberg. In the ninth, Hamberg homered to add to his day and cut the deficit down to three.

Peraza went 3-for-4 on the day with two RBI, two runs and a walk. Armas also notched a three-hit afternoon.
