Saint Mary's is gaining ground on Pepperdine for first place

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Heading into the final week of the regular season, Pepperdine maintains its first-place lead by a slim two-point margin over Saint Mary's, and the Gaels own the tiebreaker over the Waves. Portland remains in contention with a showdown Wednesday afternoon in Malibu.

The Pilots currently boast 18 points, four behind Pepperdine and two behind Saint Mary's. Portland plays at Pepperdine Wednesday at 3 p.m. while Saint Mary's plays at Oregon State at 5 p.m. A Pepperdine win combined with a Saint Mary's loss on Wednesday would clinch the West Coast Conference title and the NCAA Tournament automatic qualifier for the Waves. Any other result and the 2025 champions will be crowned on the final day of the regular season on Saturday. 

Waves Look To Clinch A Championship
In conference play, Pepperdine is outscoring its opponents, 23-5. Julia Quinonez ranks second in the league lead in goals with nine and in points (21), while Tatum Wynalda paces the league in assists with nine. Pepperdine ranks second in the league in points (108) and goals (38). 

Pepperdine is vying to earn the automatic qualifer into the NCAA Tournament and punch its ticket into the field for the second straight year and for the fourth time in the last six years. 

Following Wednesday's game vs Portland, the Waves conclude the regular season on Saturday at San Francisco. 

Gaels Continue Their Historic Season
Saint Mary's is unbeaten in 13 of its last 14 games. During that span, the Gaels are outscoring opponents by a margin of 20-4. SMC owns the tiebreaker over Pepperdine after going to Malibu and defeating the Waves, 1-0, earlier this season. The Gaels have only allowed 10 goals this season, a conference best, along with a GAA of 0.63, second best in the league. Goalie Kate Plachy, the reigning West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week, is tied for third in the nation with 11 shutouts. 

Following Wednesday's matchup in Corvallis, the Gaels finish the regular season on Saturday at home against the reigning West Coast Conference champions Santa Clara. 

Redhawks' Offense Has Been On Fire
Seattle U leads the West Coast Conference in points (122) and goals (43), and the Redhawks have won four of their last six. 

SU snapped Saint Mary's nine-game unbeaten streak with a 2-0 win on Oct. 11, one of three teams to score multiple goals against the Gaels this season.  

Reigning West Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week Caroline Penner leads the league in goals (14) and in points (34). She most recently scored four goals and added an assist in a 6-1 win over Oregon State last week. The Redhawks also put on a clinic offensively with a 6-0 win at home over Pacific on Oct. 8. SU has scored three or more goals in a game nine times this season.
