SAN DIEGO - No. 2 seed San Diego avenged its regular-season loss to No. 3 seed Washington State last week with a 4-2 victory in the semifinals of the West Coast Conference Women's Tennis Tournament at the Aztec Tennis Complex on the San Diego State campus.
With the win, the Toreros are headed for another tournament championship matchup against top-seeded Pepperdine on Saturday.
The doubles matches were close with all three courts finishing. WSU jumped out first with a 6-0 victory on No. 3 doubles. The Toreros rebounded to claim victories on top two courts, though. Kailey Evans and Claudia de las Heras clinched the doubles point for USD on Court One with a 6-4 win. USD got on the board first on Court Two with a 6-2 win by Kristina Nordikyan and Hannah Read.
In singles, the Cougars came roaring back after losing the doubles point by picking up four first-set victories. The Toreros had to battle back with Hannah Read setting the tone with the first singles win on the fourth court in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3.
WSU's Elyse Tse answered with a straight-set win of her own to get the Cougars on the board on the third court, 6-4, 6-3. Her teammate Chisato Kanemake followed suit for the second win of the day for the Cougars on the fifth court with a three-set win, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1.
After Gabby Gregg put USD in contention to win on Court Six with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory, Kailey Evans ended the match on Court Two, rallying to win, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
