SAN BRUNO, Calif. – After capturing its second consecutive West Coast Conference Baseball Regular Season championship, San Diego claimed three of the five major individual awards and placed four on the 2025 All-West Coast Conference First Team as the Conference announced the 2025 West Coast Conference Baseball All-Conference honors on Tuesday.
USD major award winners were Pitcher of the Year Cal Scolari, Defensive Player of the Year Jayden Lobliner and Brock Ungricht was once again selected by his peers as Coach of the Year. In addition, Gonzaga's Mikey Bell won West Coast Conference Player of the Year and LMU's Nate Savoie won Freshman of the Year.
All five individual awards – along with the All-West Coast Conference First, Second and Freshman Teams – were voted on solely by the league’s nine head coaches.
In conference games, Bell ranked first in hits (41) and RBI (32). His efforts helped the Bulldogs garner a conference record of 16-8 and clinch the No. 2 seed in this week's West Coast Conference Tournament. He enters the conference tournament on a 15-game hitting streak with 10 multi-hit performances during that span. Bell became the first Gonzaga student-athlete to win Conference Player of the Year since Jeff Bohling in 2016.
Earning Conference Coach of the Year for the second straight year, Ungricht has the Toreros in this week's Conference tournament as the No. 1 seed after concluding the regular season with a record of 19-4 over their last 23 games and winners of nine of their last 10 conference games. The last time a USD coach won WCC Coach of the Year was Rich Hill in 2015.
Scolari became the first San Diego pitcher to win West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year honors since David Hill in 2015. In conference games, Scolari held opposing batters to hit .200 against him. In his last three outings, Scolari won all three games, going six full in each outing. On May 2 in the win over San Francisco, he posted a season-best 11 strikeouts.
Savoie claimed Freshman of the Year honors, giving the Lions two of the last three Freshman of the Year honorees (Khadim Diaw in 2023). In league games, Savoie batted .327 with nine home runs, 26 RBI and 10 doubles. On two different occasions this season he produced four-hit games, including vs. Gonzaga on May 3. He has also homered in four of his last five games.
The second straight Torero to win Conference Defensive Player of the Year (Ariel Armas in 2024), Lobliner was stellar defensively behind the plate all year for USD. He boasted a .992 fielding percentage with only three errors. The catcher threw out runners trying to steal on 15 occasions. He is the second Torero to ever win WCC Defensive Player of the Year.
Four first-team honorees - Robbie Ayers (LMU), Jack Gurevitch (San Diego), Logan Reddemann (San Diego) and Austin Smith (San Diego) picked up all-conference first team accolades after previously being named to the 2025 All-West Coast Conference Preseason Team. Reddemann and Smith earned All-West Coast Conference First Team recognition for the second straight year.
The West Coast Conference Baseball Tournament runs from May 21-24 from Las Vegas Ballpark. Click
