GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The field is set for the Grand Finals after heat races on the first day of the West Coast Conference Rowing Championship on Friday at Lake Natoma in Gold River, California. Oregon State won all four of its heat races by open water, crossing the line with at least a 10-second advantage in each heat.
The top three teams from each heat advanced to tomorrow's Grand Finals in the II Four, Four, II Eight and Eight, while other boats will move on to the Petite Finals. Gonzaga, Oregon State, Saint Mary's San Diego and Washington State earned a spot in all four Grand Finals on Saturday. The Zags and Washington State each won two heats on Friday.
In the I eights, Oregon State, Gonzaga, Washington State, Sacramento State, San Diego, and Saint Mary's all advanced to the Grand Finals. Gonzaga recorded the fastest time on Friday, finishing the course in 6:34.339 to capture its heat. The Beavers raced down the course in 6:36.927 to win their heat. Saint Mary's secured the last spot in the Grand Final with a time of 6:54.081. Creighton, Portland, and Santa Clara will compete in the Petite Finals.
Oregon State, Gonzaga, Washington State, San Diego, Sacramento State, and Saint Mary's advanced to the Grand Finals in the II Eight. WSU had the low time in heat racing with a 6:45.119 as it moved its bow ahead of Gonzaga at the finish line in its heat. The Zags finished with a time of 6:45.657. OSU won its heat with a time of 6:45.150. Sacramento State earned the last spot, edging Santa Clara by four seats at the finish line. San Diego also advanced within that pack, coming in ahead of the Hornets by just three seconds. Creighton, Portland, and Santa Clara will compete in the Petite Finals.
In the Fours, Oregon State, Gonzaga, Washington State, San Diego, Sacramento State, and Saint Mary's advanced to the Grand Finals. The Beavers raced down the course in a time of 7:27.445 to lead the field. The Hornets earned the last spot in the Grand Finals with a time of 7:47.077. Creighton, Portland, and Santa Clara will compete in the Petite Finals.
In the II Fours, Washington State, Oregon State, Gonzaga, Portland, San Diego, and Saint Mary's advanced to the Grand Finals. Washington State had the low time during the heat races with a 7:35.743. Saint Mary's edged out Creighton by just over one second to claim the last spot in the Grand Finals. Creighton and Sacramento State will compete in the Petite Finals.
