LAS VEGAS - No. 3 seed Saint Mary's scored early and often and defeated No. 2 seed Gonzaga, 14-6, in the second round of the 2025 West Coast Conference Baseball Tournament from Las Vegas Ballpark in Las Vegas.
With the win, SMC will play No. 4 seed LMU on Friday at 4:05 p.m. The Bulldogs will play No. 1 seed San Diego in an elimination game on Friday at noon.
Saint Mary's got off to a hot start thanks to Eddie Madrigal's leadoff home run to right center followed by a two-run shot by Brian Duroff to straight away center field to push the early Gael lead to 3-0.
Gonzaga answered right back to tie the game in the bottom of the first. The rally started with an RBI single by Tommy Eisenstat on a high hopper over the first baseman's head to score Hudson Shupe and make it 3-1, Saint Mary's. Max Coupe's RBI groundout cut the Gonzaga deficit to one before Josh Hankins singled to left for another RBI single that evened the game at three.
The Gaels got those runs right back in the top of the second with a three-run frame highlighted by the second roundtripper of the game by Madrigal. Aiden Taurek laced a triple two batters later, sending home another Gael and increased the lead to four at 7-3.
After SMC extended the lead to 8-4, Gonzaga's Rece Schuerman laced a two-run home run to right in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the Gonzaga deficit down to two at 8-6.
Just when it looked like the Zags were going to claim the lead, a couple of key errors by pitcher Kai Francis and third baseman Josh Hankins ignited a Saint Mary's two-run rally that put the Gaels back up by four at 10-6. The rally continued with a two-run single by Diego Castellanos that made the score 12-6. Ian Amstrong completed the six-run inning eighth inning with a two-run hit that gave him a 5-for-5 day.
Armstrong's five hits set a tournament single-game record. Madrigal's two-home run performance tied a tournament single-game record.
