LAS VEGAS - No. 4 seed LMU defeated No. 1 seed San Diego, 8-3, in the second round of the 2025 West Coast Conference Baseball Tournament from Las Vegas Ballpark.
The Lions will face the winner of the Gonzaga-Saint Mary's game on Friday at 4 p.m. San Diego will play the non-advancing team in an elimination game on Friday at noon.
San Diego wasted no time getting on the board when Jack Gurevitch led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run that just snuck around the right field foul pole. It marked the first of three hits on the day for Gurevitch. Later in the inning, Rex Watson knocked in Isaiah Lane with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 2-0, Toreros in the first.
In the top of the third, LMU took a 3-2 lead highlighted by a two-run homer by Beau Ankeney, his second roundtripper of the tournament. Prior to the home run, the Lions capitalized on a USD error to get their first run of the day on the board.
USD tied it up with a rally in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Rex Watson singled to right field, scoring Lane and evening the game at three.
Ankeney broke the tie in the top of the seventh when he just missed his second home run of the day with a sac fly to the warning track that scored Cam Hassert to make it 4-3 LMU. Robbie Ayers padded the lead in the next at-bat with an RBI single to right that scored Nate Savoie, giving the Lions a two-run lead.
LMU added three more runs in the top of the eighth, including an RBI single by Ankeney to make it 8-3, Lions. Ankeney finished the day with four RBI.
Hassert went 3-for-4 with three runs.
