LAS VEGAS - No. 9 seed Portland got 23 points from Garrett Nuckolls and the Pilots knocked off No. 8 seed Washington State 74-68 in the second round of the Credit Union 1 West Coast Conference Men's Basketball Championship from Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
With the victory, the Pilots advance to play No. 5 seed San Francisco tomorrow at 6 p.m. Portland opened the tournament with a convincing victory over No. 12 seed Pepperdine in the first round.
A back-and-forth first half ended with the Cougars up by four before Portland took control of the game in the second half.
In the second half, Portland shot 55 percent from the field and limited Washington State to shoot just 40 percent from the field.
Joel Foxwell notched 17 points in the win, including shooting a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. His 10 rebounds earned him a double-double and he also dished out five assists. Jermaine Ballisager Webb picked up his own double-double on 12 rebounds and 11 points. Defensively, he added two blocks.
WSU standout freshman Ace Glass paced the Cougars in scoring with 19 points and five assists.
