LAS VEGAS - No. 5 Portland ended the run by No. 9 Washington State with a 72-62 win in the third round of the Credit Union 1 West Coast Conference Women's Basketball Championship from Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
With the victory, the Pilots advance to face No. 4 seed Oregon State in the quarterfinals on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. PT. Washington State was looking to win three in a row in the conference tournament after previously defeating Seattle U and Pacific in the first two rounds.
Rhyan Mogul led the way for Portland with 19 points and five assists. She made all three of her three-point attempts. Lainey Spear also reached double figures in scoring, finishing with 16 points, three reboundsd and three assists.
After leading the Cougars to victory in the first two rounds, Eleonora Villa once again led the Cougars in scoring with 16 points. Charlotte Abraham secured 15 points and seven rebounds. Alex Covill also posted seven rebounds along with 14 points.
The Pilots caused a lot of Washington State turnovers, forcing 11 steals to just four for the Cougars. Portland also worked well in transition with eight fast break points and holding the Cougars to none.
