West Coast Conference Women's Tennis Round Up - April 8

Two weeks remain in the regular season

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Defending West Coast Conference champion Pepperdine women's tennis remains one of the top teams in the nation, checking in this week at No. 9 in the ITA team rankings. The Waves are 5-0 to start conference play, one game up on second-place Washington State (4-1). 

Pepperdine is 14-4 overall this season and the Waves earned seven wins over teams in the ITA top-25 over the course of this season.

In The Rankings
The West Coast Conference boasts three teams in the top 71 ITA rankings - No. 6 Pepperdine, No. 42 San Diego and No. 67 Washington State. USD is in third place at 3-1 in league play. 

In the ITA singles rankings, three Waves rank in the top 42 with Anastasiia Grechkina at No. 20, Ziva Falkner at No. 33 and Sonja Zhiyenbayeva at No. 42. Also in the top 100 in singles is Eva Alvarez Sande (No. 88). In doubles, the duo of Falkner and Zhiyenbayeva rank No. 12.

This Week
Pepperdine is off this week with two matches remaining on the final week of the season. The Waves next face LMU on Tuesday, April 14, in Malibu. 

Four matches are set for Saturday including second-place Washington State hosting Seattle U. San Diego travels to the Bay Area to face Saint Mary's, while Pacific hosts Santa Clara and Gonzaga hosts Portland. 

On Sunday, a trio of matches will take place starting with the Cougars welcoming Portland to Pullman. Gonzaga hosts Seattle U in another Pacific Northwest matchup and Saint Mary's hosts Santa Clara. 

Last Week
Last week's conference action started on Thursday with Portland sweeping Pacific and Saint Mary's topping Seattle U on the road, 4-2. 

Two more matches took place last Friday as LMU beat Santa Clara on the road, 6-1, and Pepperdine swept San Diego, 4-0. Three of the Waves' five conference victories this season have been shutouts and another win was a 6-1 outcome over Portland. 

Last Saturday saw Pacific edge past Seattle U on the road, 4-3 and Portland handle Saint Mary's at home, 6-1. Also, battling with a depleted lineup and having to forfeit on two courts, WSU held on and defeated Gonzaga, 4-3, at home.
