GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Saint Mary’s, Gonzaga, Oregon State, San Diego and Washington State each advanced all four of their boats through to Saturday’s Gran Finals during heat racing Friday morning at the West Coast Conference Rowing Championship at Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif.
The Grand Finals will feature the top three boats from each of Friday’s heats in the second four, four, second eight and eight. All other boats will move on to the Petite Finals.
In the first race, Oregon State’s second Four boat was victorious by open water, winning with a time of 7:34.751. Washington State and San Diego rounded out the top three and will move on to the second Four Grand Final Saturday at 8:15 a.m. with times of 7:43.437 and 8:12.040, respectively.
In the second heat of the second Four race, Gonzaga finished ahead of the pack by open water, finishing with a time of 7:53.609. Portland crossed the finish line with a four-seat advantage over Saint Mary’s, posting a time of 8:05.530 over the Gaels’ 8:07.867. Sacramento State’s 8:10.877 saw the Hornets finish fourth in the heat. Gonzaga, Oregon State, Portland, San Diego, Saint Mary’s and Washington State all earn a spot in the II Four Grand Final.
The Four first heat saw the Beavers earn their second top finish, again winning with an open water time of 7:29.784 for the No. 20 nationally ranked Beavers. San Diego finished second in the heat by 14 seconds ahead of the remainder of the pack with a 7:51.708 time. Saint Mary’s earned the final spot in the with a 8:05.643 time in third.
Washington State captured the second heat of the Fours, finishing with a time of 7:36.786 for the open water finish. Gonzaga and Portland will move on to the Grand Final after finishing second and third with times of 7:44.066 and 7:54.978, respectively.
Washington State and Oregon State finished as the top crews in the second eight heats, both winning by open water. Saint Mary’s, San Diego, Gonzaga and Portland each earned spots in the Second Eight Grand Final, with Portland advancing over Sacramento State in the second heat by three seats.
Oregon State captured its fourth open water finish of heat racing, with an win in the eight, crossing the line in 6:44.329. Gonzaga crossed the line with a three-seat advantage over Washington State to finish second in the heat, with both the Bulldogs and Cougars advancing to the Grand Final.
In the closest race on the day, San Diego crossed the finish line first with a two-seat advantage on Sacramento State. The Toreros finished the heat with a time of 6:55.151. Sacramento State crossed the line in 6:56.171. Saint Mary’s earned the final spot in the Grand Final with a time of 7:01.793. Gonzaga, Oregon State, Portland, San Diego, Saint Mary’s, and Washington State all earned a spot in the Eight Grand Final tomorrow.
Saturday’s West Coast Conference Rowing Championship Finals will begin at 8:00 a.m., starting with the Second Four Petite Final. All finals will air live on ESPN+. Make sure to check out the
