Saint Mary's shook things up in the NCAA Softball Tournament, advancing to the regional final after eliminating regional host and No. 13 seed Oregon.
The Gaels won two games in the tournament over Idaho State and Oregon before being eliminated by eventual Women's College World Series participant Mississippi State. The Gaels' leader in the circle, Odhi Vasquez was instrumental in SMC's victories in the tournament as well as pitching performances from freshman Madeline Haun. Vasquez won West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year, as well. Following the conclusion of the season, Vasquez signed a contract with Bravas de Cidra of the Liga Premier de Softbol Femenino.
Saint Mary's head coach Sonja Garnett won both the West Coast Conference Coach of the Year and D1 Softball Mid-Major Coach of the Year. Under her leadership, the Gaels have won at least a share of each of the last three conference championships and the Gaels have now competed in the NCAA Tournament in two of the last three seasons.
It came down to the final weekend of the regular season between Saint Mary's and Santa Clara for who would win the conference title and get the automatic qualifier into the NCAA Tournament. The series, which took place at Santa Clara, saw the Gaels needing just one win to clinch the AQ after earning a share of the conference title the weekend before against LMU. After the Broncos won the season opener, the Gaels won the outright conference title on national television (ESPNU) in the second game of the series.
One of the nation's top hitters, Oregon State's Jaeya Butler won West Coast Conference Player of the Year. Santa Clara's Ellison Schroeder won Freshman of the Year and LMU's Avery Francis won Defensive Player of the Year.
