SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Four men’s basketball student-athletes, all members of the Preseason All-WCC squad, were named to the Lou Henson, Lute Olson and Wooden Mid-Season Watch Lists.
Saint Mary’s guard Jordan Ford, BYU forward Yoeli Child and Loyola Marymount guard James Batemon made the watch list for the Lou Henson Award, given annually to the nation’s top mid-major college basketball player, while Childs joined Gonzaga’s Rui Hachimura as candidates for the Lute Olson Award, given to the national player of the year.
Hachimura also was named to the 25-man Wooden Award Watch List.
BYU
Childs has started all 17 games for the Cougars while averaging team highs of 21.6 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. He is also shooting 54.2 percent from the field and has 10 double-doubles. Dating back to last season, Childs has scored in double figures in 23-consecutive games.
Nationally, Childs is tied for third in double-doubles, tied for 15th in rebounding and is 21st in scoring. In the BYU record book, Childs has climbed to 24th in career scoring, 16th in rebounds and fifth in blocks.
GONZAGA
Hachimura is averaging a team-high 21.4 points per game, which ranks third in the West Coast Conference. He is eighth in the conference shooting 59.5 percent from the field and 10th grabbing 6.4 rebounds per game. The junior has scored in double-digits in each of GU's 16 games this season, and has reached double-digits in the last 18 games dating back to last season.
Hachimura has scored at least 20 points in 11 games this season. He also has 15 steals and 11 blocks through 16 games. The Toyama, Japan native, was named the Most Outstanding Player at the Maui Invitational after leading the Bulldogs to the tournament's title.
LOYOLA MARYMOUNT
Batemon's 18.4 points per game and 3.8 assists per game this season rank sixth and seventh, respectively, in the West Coast Conference. Batemon sits alone atop the WCC averaging 2.0 steals per game this year. On the national level, Batemon ranks fifth in Division I with 104 free throws made.
SAINT MARY'S
Ford's 22.8 points per game leads the West Coast Conference and is good for 14th in the country, while his 44.6 3-point field goal percentage is second in the conference. The Preseason All-WCC guard also checks in at seventh in the WCC with 2.2 made threes per contest. Nationally, Ford cracks the top-10 with 388 total points, 142 made field goals and 272 field goal attempts - sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.
Ford has scored in double figures in all but one game this season, including two 30-point outings: against Utah Valley (35 - Nov. 11) and against UC Irvine (30 - Nov. 28).
