SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The San Diego men's tennis team has been selected to repeat as champions in the upcoming 2019 West Coast Conference season, as voted on by the league head coaches, it was announced by the conference office Wednesday.
San Diego, the five-time reigning winners of the West Coast Conference championship, were the overwhelming favorite with eight first-place votes for 80 points and return two members who were selected to the All-WCC Preseason Team in sophomore August Holmgren and junior Gui Osorio.
A three-way tie for second place between Brigham Young, Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara at 63 points will lead to an exciting WCC season. The Broncos earned one first-place vote and return All-WCC Preseason team member Andrew Gu. The Cougars are represented on the team by junior Sean Hill, and the Lions are represented on the preseason team by senior Lukas Moenter.
Pepperdine received the other first-place vote and is picked to finish fifth with 46 points. Picked right behind the Waves are Portland (39 points) and Pacific (37 points) in sixth and seventh, respectively.
Meanwhile, Gonzaga (29 points), Saint Mary’s (16 points) and San Francisco (14 points) round out the ten-team field at slots 8-10. Damon Kesaris from Saint Mary’s is the sixth member of the All-WCC Preseason Team.
The 2019 WCC Women’s Tennis Championship will take place at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, Calif., April 25-27.
