SAN BRUNO, Calif. – San Diego junior Gui Osorio was named the WCC Player of the Year, breakout freshman Sema Pankin is the conference Freshman of the Year and Toreros head coach Ryan Keckley was selected as the WCC Coach of the Year in the 2019 Men’s Tennis All-Conference honors that were announced Wednesday by the conference office.
A total of 24 singles student-athletes and 10 doubles teams were recognized as All-Conference honorees. All three individual awards - along with the All-West Coast Conference Teams - were voted on by the league's 10 head coaches.
Osorio used a perfect 9-0 conference season to become the third WCC Player of the Year in San Diego history, following in the footsteps of Dean Jackson (2011) and Uros Petronijevic (2015), as Torero’s to claim the conference’s top honor. The junior went 24-6 overall with an 18-3 dual match record that includes a pristine 9-0 record playing in both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. He ended the season on a 12-match winning streak while accumulating four wins against ranked opponents, including a victory against eighth-ranked Nicolas Moreno de Alboran of UC Santa Barbara.
Pankin is the first Portland Pilot to be named the conference Freshman of the Year after anchoring the top of the Portland lineup as a freshman filling in for two-time WCC Player of the Year Michail Pervolarakis. Pankin went 18-13 on the year with a 10-8 dual singles match record, including a three-set win over then-No. 108 ranked Lukas Moenter of LMU and a straight set win against Pepperdine’s top player.
Keckley earns his second-consecutive WCC Coach of the Year honor after leading the Toreros to their fifth regular season title in six years and third in his four-year tenure. The Toreros went 8-1 in conference play, winning three of those matches with 4-0 sweeps. Keckley becomes the first conference coach to repeat as Coach of the Year since Adam Steinberg of Pepperdine took three consecutive awards from 2008-10.
The men’s teams will kick off the WCC tennis championships on Thursday, April 26 with the first serve at 1 p.m.
