SAN MATEO, Calif. – West Coast Conference regular season champion No. 9 Loyola Marymount led the way with four of the 11 2020-21 All-WCC First Team selections as the 2020-21 WCC Spring major individual awards and All-WCC honors were announced by the conference office.
LMU also took home four of five major awards in Offensive Player of the Year
Noel Caliskan, Goalkeeper of the Year
Jacob Jackson, Defender of the Year
Gerardo Lopez and Coach of the Year
Paul Krumpe. San Francisco’s
Nonso Adimabua claimed Freshman of the Year honors.
All five individual awards - including the all-conference teams - were voted on solely by the WCC's eight head coaches.
Caliskan, the 2019 WCC Freshman of the Year, becomes the first Lion – and second overall – to be named the WCC Offensive Player of the Year (previously “Player of the Year”) since former MLS player
Arturo Torres shared honors in 2000. In WCC play, the sophomore midfielder accumulated three goals on 19 shots with three assists in eight matches for LMU. The Cologne, Germany native averaged 1.12 points per match, good for second among conference leaders. Caliskan wrapped up the regular season in impressive fashion scoring two goals in the final two minutes in a road win at No. 23 Saint Mary’s to secure the outright WCC title.
Lopez is the fourth Lion named WCC Defender of the Year (formerly Defensive Player of the Year) and first since Connor Johnson in 2016. Lopez led the stingiest defensive unit in the WCC, holding conference foes to just two goals in eight matches. LMU allowed just 72 shots and posted six shutouts.
Jackson turned in a record-setting year to become the second Lion (
Paul Blanchette, 2013 & 2015) to earn WCC Goalkeeper of the Year honors to since it was instituted in 2011. Jackson’s line was remarkable as he played all 760:00 minutes between the pipes, allowing just two goals for a 0.24 GAA while making 17 saves. Jackson rated second among NCAA Division I leaders in GAA, fourth in saves percentage (0.895) and fifth in shutouts with six in eight matches. Jackson is the second WCC goalkeeper in the last two completed seasons to post a WCC-only GAA of better than 0.25. Saint Mary’s Remi Prieur allowed one goal in seven matches during the 2019 campaign for a 0.15 GAA – the best in the modern era.
Adimabua was named the WCC Freshman of the Year after a season in which he started all seven conference games at forward for a Dons team that finished with a 5-4-2 overall record, 3-2-2 in league play. The Nigeria native registered three goals and four assists in WCC play and added a pair of assists in non-conference action. Adimabua registered an assist in five consecutive matches and registered at least one point in six straight contests. Adimabua is the first Don to win Freshman of the Year accolades since
Tim Weaver did so in 1993 in the second year of the award.
Krumpe was masterful in leading the Lions to its second straight NCAA berth and first WCC regular season title since 2013. The Lions won the title in dramatic fashion with a 3-1 triumph at No. 23 Saint Mary’s – the 200th career victory in his coaching career. It is Krumpe’s third WCC Coach of the Year honor after also claiming the award in 1999 and 2013.
