CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL | REFLECTION BAY GOLF CLUB
FINAL WCC CHAMPIONSHIP STATS
SAN MATEO, Calif. – After hosting a thrilling Women’s Golf Championship last week at Reflection Bay Golf Club in Henderson, Nev., the West Coast Conference is pleased to unveil its All-WCC team and major award winners. All-WCC First Team selections and each major individual award winners were selected solely by the five conference head coaches.
For the first time since 2014, all three major individual honors were awarded to different programs.
BYU junior
Allysha Mae Mateo is the third Cougar to earn WCC Player of the Year honors joining a list that includes
Kendra Dalton (2017-18), and
Rose Huang (2016). Mateo posted five top-5 finishes in nine events and was the 36-hole leader at the 2021 WCC Women’s Golf Championship at 3-under.
Gonzaga head coach
Brad Rickel earns WCC Coach of the Year honors for the fifth time and guided the Bulldogs to the first WCC Championship in program history. The Zags defeated 18-time and defending champion Pepperdine Saturday, on the second playoff hole, to cap a remarkable, resilient season. Gonzaga won a pair of spring tournament titles before registering its third at Reflection Bay.
Pepperdine’s
Caroline Hwang earned WCC Freshman of the Year accolades, becoming the 10th Wave to accomplish the feat and the first since former teammate Momoka Kobori did so in 2017. Hwang’s year was bookended by tournament victories as she won her collegiate debut at the Moorpark Intercollegiate and then seized medalist honors at the 2021 WCC Women’s Golf Championship. Hwang is the first freshman to win the conference individual crown since Wave All-American
Grace Na did so in 2011.
Pepperdine led the way with four All-WCC First Team selections – all of them underclassmen and three of them freshman, while Gonzaga placed three on the list headlined by 2019 WCC Freshman of the Year
Quynn Duong. San Francisco had a pair of votes and BYU earned the final spot.
This year’s 10-member first team features just six underclassmen and just one senior. San Francisco’s
Annika Borrelli and Gonzaga’s Duong appear on their second straight All-WCC roster.
