SAN MATEO, Calif. – Two days after winning the WCC Women’s Golf Championship, Pepperdine’s Lauren Gomez won both the WCC Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year awards, as the Conference announced it’s all-conference awards on Monday. Pepperdine head coach Laurie Gibbs and San Francisco head coach Sara Doell were tabbed WCC Co-Coach of the Year.
All-WCC selections and each major individual award winners were selected solely by the five conference head coaches.
Currently ranked No. 84 on GolfStat, Gomez won the conference title after shooting a 54-hole score of 3-under 213 (70, 72, 71). She led throughout the entire event, which resulted in her first collegiate title. Gomez had 10 birdies for the tournament, tied for the most in the field. She boasted her team-best fourth top-10 result of the season.
Since 2010, there have only been two other occurances when the Player of the Year was also the Freshman of the Year. In 2016, BYU’s Rose Huang won both Player of the Year while being tabbed the Co-Freshman of the Year. In 2011, Pepperdine’s Grace Na secured both awards outright.
Gomez’s head coach, Gibbs, picked up her 14th WCC Coach of the Year accolades, most recently winning it in 2019 prior to today. Gibbs won it four years in a row from 2005-08 and enjoyed a streak being WCC Coach of the Year nine out of 11 seasons from 1998-2008. Gibbs guided Pepperdine to the 2022 WCC Championship last Saturday. Pepperdine has now won 19 of 25 WCC Women’s Golf Championships, including 14 straight between 2002 and 2015. In addition to the success of Gomez, the Waves also boasted three golfers in the top four on the individual leaderboard on Saturday.
Now in her fifth season at USF, Doell led the Dons to four top-five finishes in their five regular season competitions this season. Doell picked up her first tournament championship at USF when the Dons were crowned tournament champions of The Valley Invitational in Bakersfield on Feb. 8. Doell brought in freshman Riana Mission who had a steller rookie season for the Dons. Currently ranked No. 85 on GolfStat, Mission finished tied for sixth on the leaderboard at the WCC Championships.
BYU and Pepperdine led the way with three All-WCC selections each. San Francisco and Santa Clara garnered a pair of honorees. This year’s 11-member all-conference team features six underclassmen and five seniors. San Francisco’s Annika Borrelli and Gonzaga’s Quynn Duong appear on their third straight All-WCC roster, while Mateo and Higo earned their second-straight all-conference accolades.
