GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Gonzaga claimed its 21st overall West Coast Conference Championship and eighth consecutive Saturday after sweep all three scoring races at Lake Natoma. With the win, the Bulldogs secured the automatic berth to the 2023 NCAA Rowing Championship.
Gonzaga opened the varsity four race with a convincing win, topping second place LMU by nine seconds. The second varsity eight race featured a seven second victory by the Zags and another second-place finish for the Lions. The final race of the day was all Gonzaga again in the varsity eight as the Bulldogs crossed the finish line at 6:38.492, in front of San Diego at 6:42.937. Portland finished third in the varsity eight (6:45.143).
The Zags finished with 42 points, San Diego had 33, followed by LMU with 30 points. Portland was fourth (27 points) while Creighton was fifth (18 points).
Santa Clara could not field complete teams in all counting races and did not place in the overall team score.
The field for the 2023 NCAA Rowing National Championship will be revealed on Tuesday. The NCAA Championship will be held May 26-28 at Camden County Boathouse in Pennsauken, New Jersey.
