SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - After winning West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year last year, San Diego's Oliver Tarvet won WCC Men's Tennis Player of the Year, highlighting the annual awards as announced on Wednesday by the Conference. Pacific's Robin Goodman won Coach of the Year while Pepperdine's Edward Winter won Freshman of the Year.
Each of the All-WCC team and individual honors are voted on solely by the head coaches of each WCC men’s tennis team.
Tarvet led the way for San Diego to claim a share of the 2024 WCC Regular Season Championship. Ranked No. 6 in the ITA rankings, Tarvet went 24-5 in singles matches this season and 10-0 in doubles with his partner Stian Klaassen. He became the fourth Torero to win this award in the last six seasons in which a winner was announced (2020-pandemic year).
Winter was pivotal in the Waves clinching a share of the 2024 WCC Regular Season Championship. It's the first time since 2021 that a Wave won the award (Guy Den Ouden). Winter went 17-13 in singles matches this season, including finishing 10-9 on the No. 1 court. His victory in the regular season finale clinched a share of the title for the Waves.
Goodman guided Pacific to the third seed in the WCC Tournament after a 14-match winning streak earlier this season propelled the Tigers to a 16-4 overall record a record of 5-3 in the WCC. Last season, Pacific finished 5-15 last season, so Goodman guided the Tigers to a tremendous turnaround in 2024. He is the first Tiger to win this award since Ryan Redeondo in 2016.
Two Waves were named to the All-WCC first team in Winter and Pietro Fellin. In addition to Tarvet being named to the first team, three more Toreros garnered second-team recognition - Stian Klaassen, Lambert Ruland and Iiro Vasa Santa Clara also featured multiple players on the all-conference team with Christian Lerby being named to the first team and Guillaume Dalmasso earning second team honors.
Peter Alam of Pacific was named to the All-WCC first team in both singles and doubles along with his partner Justas Trainauskas. Tarvet was the only other player to garner first team accolades in both singles and doubles.
Vasa, Lerby, Arthur Pantino (LMU) and Sasha Trkulja (Gonzaga) garnered all-conference honors for the second straight season.
