Pacific’s Carlos Astiazaran and Pepperdine’s Mahanth Chirravuri Named West Coast Conference Men’s Golf Co-Players of the Year

John Cook of Pacific honored as West Coast Conference Coach of the Year

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Pacific sophomore Carlos Astiazaran and Pepperdine junior Mahanth Chirravuri shared West Coast Conference Men’s Golf Player of the Year honors as the conference announced its all-conference team and major awards. John Cook of Pacific was named the West Coast Conference Coach of the Year and Santa Clara’s Matthew Robles was voted the Conference’s Freshman of the Year.

All three major awards, along with the all-conference team, were voted on solely by the league’s 10 head coaches.

Pepperdine had the most selections to the 10-member all-conference team with three, while LMU and Santa Clara had two each, and Pacific, San Diego and Washington State each had one representative.

Chirravuri, along with teammates Brady Siravo and Willy Walsh, and LMU’s Mason Snyder are repeat selections to the 10-member All-West Coast Conference Team, having all earned a spot last season. Astiazaran was an honorable mention selection last season. Reis, who is an honorable mention selection this season, is recognized for the second year in a row after earning a spot on the 10-member all-conference team last season.

Chirravuri was the West Coast Conference individual champion after defeating teammate Kristoffer Kuvaas in a playoff at the West Coast Conference Championship this past weekend. He is the highest ranked player in the West Coast Conference in the latest SCOREBOARD by Clippd rankings, at No. 46 nationally. Chirravuri shot 15-under at the West Coast Conference Championship for his second top three showing in as many tournaments. The junior finished third at the Western Intercollegiate earlier in April.

Astiazaran owns two wins and five top three finishes this season. He is ranked No. 70 in the latest SCOREBOARD by Clippd rankings. The sophomore finished third at the West Coast Conference Championship with a 12-under for stroke play. He made a big putt to help put Pacific in the match play semifinals at the event. Astiazaran also finished second at the El Macero Classic, the GCU Invitational, the Nick Watney Invitational and the Leadership and Golf Collegiate Championship. Astiazaran was named the West Coast Conference Men’s Golfer of the Month for February.

Robles is the fourth West Coast Conference Men’s Golf Freshman of the Year from Santa Clara, and the first since Hayden Shieh won the award in 2015. He is ranked No. 175 in the latest SCOREBOARD by Clippd rankings. Robles posted five top-10 finishes this season, including three in the top five. Robles boasted a fourth-place finish at the Nick Watney Invitational, carding an 8-under at the event.

Cook guided the Tigers to the semifinals of match play at the West Coast Conference Championship. Pacific recorded the second-lowest round of the West Coast Conference Championship, carding a 17-under as a team on Saturday in the third round to finish fourth in stroke play and ultimately earn a spot in the match play semifinals.
