LAS VEGAS - Led by David Fuchs' 23 points, No. 5 seed San Francisco beat No. 9 seed Portland, 82-65, in the third round of the Credit Union 1 West Coast Conference Men's Basketball Championship from Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
With the win, USF advances to play No. 5 seed Oregon State in Sunday's quarterfinals at 5:30 p.m.
Fuchs boasted a double-double on the night, also tallying 16 rebounds. The 16 rebounds tie for the fourth most in a game in the West Coast Conference this season. It was also the eighth double-double of the year for the West Coast Conference Newcomer of the Year.
Four Dons reached double figures in scoring - Tyrone Riley IV (18), Ryan Beasley (12) and Barry Wang (12).
A even first half ended in a 29-29 tie. In the second half, the Dons shot 41 percent from the field and made 10 of 11 free throws to ice the win.
For Portland, the Pilots were looking for their third straight win after previously defeating Pepperdine and Washington State. Standout freshman Joel Foxwell paced the Pilots in scoring with 16 points and Jermaine Ballisager Webb garnered 11. Foxwell also compiled a game-best six assists.
