Pepperdine Leads Men’s Golf Championship By Two Strokes After Two Rounds

San Diego’s Ian Maspat is 10-under to lead all individuals

FAIRFIELD, Calif. – Pepperdine finished the first day of the West Coast Conference Men’s Golf Championship at Green Valley Country Club in Fairfield, Calif. on Friday 16-under for two rounds 552 (275-277) to lead by two strokes over San Diego. The Waves, who finished the first round tied with Augusta at 7-under, shot 9-under as a team in the second round to take sole possession of first place heading into Saturday’s final round of stroke play
 
San Diego’s Ian Maspat had the low round of the championship so far with a 7-under 64 in the second round Friday afternoon to move to 10-under 132 (68-64) and take a four-stroke lead heading into Saturday. Maspat, who started on the 10th hole, recorded an eagle and four birdies on the front nine to close out his day. Along with the eagle, he totaled 11 birdies over his two rounds on Friday.
 
Behind Maspat is a three-way tie for second between Pepperdine’s Mahanth Chirravuri, Augusta’s Bo Blanchard and Oregon State’s Nguyen Anh Minh, who are each 6-under for the championship.  
 
Four players are under par for Pepperdine, led by last year’s conference medalist, Chirravuri at 6-under. Brady Siravo is 5-under and tied for fifth place on the individual leaderboard, while Byungho Lee is 3-under in 12th place and Willy Walsh is 1-under in 16th.  
 
San Diego used a second-round surge with a 12-under 272 for the low round by a team in the championship so far. The Toreros moved from fourth place at 2-under after round one to second place after two rounds with a 14-under 554 (282-272). They briefly took the lead late Friday afternoon before Pepperdine stormed back in front.
 
Augusta followed its 7-under 277 first-round score with a 4-under 280 in the second round to move to 11-under for the championship, as the Jags sit in third place. Blanchard leads Augusta at 6-under. He was 4-under (67) in the opening round and 2-under (69) in the second round with 10 birdies overall on the day.
 
Oregon State was the biggest mover in the second round. The Beavers found themselves in 12th place with a 6-over 290 in the first round, but rebounded with an 8-under 276 in the second round to move into a tie for sixth place with Washington State heading into Saturday. Anh Minh carded a 69 and then a 67 to lead OSU and move into contention for the individual title.  
 
The West Coast Conference Men’s Golf Championship continues Saturday with the final round of stroke play, beginning on the first and 10th tees at 7:30 a.m. The full scoreboard of Friday’s two rounds are here. Following the conclusion of the final round of stroke play on Saturday, the highest finishing individual will be crowned the Conference’s individual champion. The top four teams after Saturday will advance to match play on Sunday.
