WCC Volleyball Officially Ends Conference Season

Going into the last week of conference play, three teams had the potential of sharing the conference crown---San Diego, Saint Mary's and Pepperdine. However, with the top three teams exchanging wins and losses over the weekend, San Diego was able to secure the title outright after a sweep over Loyola Marymount on Saturday. Saint Mary's clinched second place with a win over Pepperdine, putting the Waves in third place in the final WCC standings. Loyola Marymount stayed put for fourth, while Portland and Santa Clara tied for fifth. San Francisco and Gonzaga rounded out the conference placeholders.
SCHOOL TEAM NOTES
Overall Record: 4-27
WCC Record: 1-13

  • Gonzaga ended its season with a 3-0 non-conference sweep of Eastern Washington and a 3-1 loss to visiting Portland. The Zags end the season with a 4-27 overall record and 1-13 conference mark.
  • Senior Caitlin Cozad led the Gonzaga offense against conference opponent Portland with nine kills while classmate Kelsey Bashaw added eight. Cozad, Bashaw, and senior Schylur Edelman combined for 23 of the Bulldogs' 45 kills.
  • 2010 All-WCC Honorable Mention Allyson Powell had a team-high 13 digs against the Pilots. She ended the season with a total 479 digs for a 4.17 dig per set average.
  • Sophomore outside hitter Terran Poindexter led the Zags in the win over Eastern Washington with 11 kills and a .269 hitting clip. As a team, the Bulldogs out hit (.176/-.024), out blocked (13-6) and out dug (60-41) the Eagles.

WCC Record: 6-8

  • Loyola Marymount dropped two more matches, ending the conference season on a five match losing streak. The Lions finished in fourth place in the WCC standings with a final 6-8 conference mark and 15-15 overall record.
  • Junior Jasmine Rankins led all players in the five-set match against Saint Mary's with a match-best 27 kills and team-best 16 digs. Freshman Alyse Hensley also finished with doubledigit kills, posting 14 on 27 swings for a .333 hitting percentage. Rankins was named to the All-WCC First Team, while Hensley was named to the All-Freshman Team and was an All-WCC Honorable Mention.
  • Loyola Marymount lost to San Diego in three sets to give the Toreros sole possesstion of the WCC Championship. The Lions hit just .155 and were led again by Rankins and Hensley. Rankins ended the season leading the conference in service aces with 50 total and also ranked second in the conference in kills behind San Diego's Ali Troost with 425 for a 3.79 kills per set average.

  • Pepperdine served San Diego its first and only loss of the season with a 3-2 win on Thursday. The Waves then lost to Saint Mary's in a 3-0 match that secured a second place finish for the Gaels and a third place finish for the Waves in the WCC standings.
  • In the upset over San Diego, All-WCC Honorable Mention Brittney Clark nailed down a careerbest 13 kills on 27 swings for a match-best .407 attack percentage. All-WCC Freshman Team member Kellie Woolever added 51 assists, 16 digs, five blocks and three kills.
  • Pepperdine failed to bring the momentum to its match against Saint Mary's, only hitting .122 on the day. Woolever continued her impressive weekend by concluding the regular season with five consecutive assist-dig double-doubles.
  • Stevi Robinson was named the WCC Co-Defensive Player of the Year. The Waves also had two named to the All-WCC First Team, two to the All-Freshman Team and four Honorable Mentions.

  • Portland won its last match of the season at Gonzaga, making it four road victories this season, a first for the Pilots since 1997. The Pilots also compiled a final 5-9 conference record for its first five-win conference season since 1998 and a 12-18 overall record.
  • Sophomore Ariel Usher, junior Kati Hronek, and junior Marissa Plummer each finished with double-digit kills with 14, 12 and 10, respectively. Usher, Hronek and Plummer all were named to the All-WCC Honorable Mention list.
  • 2010 WCC Co-Defensive Player of the Year Danille Dupar, also an All-WCC Honorable Mention, recorded 16 digs in her final game. She finishes the season with 560 digs, passing Carlie Price's old record of 559 set in 2002 and smashing her previous career-high of 365 set last season. Her 1,564 career digs rank fourth in school history.

  • Saint Mary's ended the season with two wins on the road and a 12-2 conference record to secure second place in the WCC standings and clinch the second best WCC record in program history. The Gaels will play their final regular season match on Saturday against the Pacific Tigers at home. The Gaels go into the match with a 20-7 record, making it the Gaels' third straight year reaching the 20-win plateau.
  • Leading the Gaels against Pepperdine was middle blocker Gabby Jolly, who recorded a match-high 11 kills on 16 swings for a .562 hitting percentage.
  • Senior middle blocker Shannon Lowell recorded 17 kills, averaging 2.12 kills per set, and 12 total blocks over the week. Lowell led the conference in blocks with 139 this season and was named to the All-WCC First Team, along with teammates Lauren Corp, Jolly, and Kapua Kamana'o. Missy White and Megan York were Honorable Mention selections, while Natalie Loos was named to the All-Freshman Team.

  • San Diego lost its only conference match of the season to Pepperdine, then came back to claim sole possession of the WCC Championship with a 3-0 win over Loyola Marymount. The Toreros earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and wait for Sunday's selection show to find out opponents.
  • Freshman middle hitter Chloe Ferrari tallied 16 kills on 21 swings, while posting a .667 attack percentage. Ferrari ended the regular season as the most decorated WCC player, earning WCC Freshman of the Year honors, while being selected to the All-WCC First Team and All-Freshman Team.
  • Senior Ali Troost also tallied double-digit kills against LMU with 14. Troost was named the WCC Player of the Year for the second time in her career, while Head Coach Jennifer Petrie was selected as the WCC Coach of the Year. Seniors Amy DeGroot and Kelsi Myers join Troost on the All-WCC First Team, while C'era Oliviera was also named to the All-Freshman Team.

WCC Record: 3-11

  • San Francisco won its last match of the season against crossbay rival Santa Clara to end with a 3-11 conference mark and 5-22 overall record.
  • Four Dons finished with double-digit kills against the Broncos. Sophomore Alycia Cox notched a team-high 14 kills and added 13 digs for her fourth double-double match of the season. Sophomores Erin Kilroy and Hadley Simmons finished with 11 kills with freshman Malina Terrell added 10 kills.
  • Senior Sarah Mandala finished with nine kills, while All-Freshman Team member Joan Caloiaro was one kill shy of a triple-double with 33 assists, 10 digs, and nine kills. Caloiaro ended her freshman campaign with 694 assists, 276 total digs and 14 double-doubles.
  • Terrell and Caloiaro led the Dons all season in attack percentage with a 2.82 and 2.23 kills per set average, respectively.
Overall Record: 14-14
WCC Record: 5-9

  • Santa Clara ended the season with a 3-1 loss to San Francisco, making it three straight conference losses to bring the Broncos' conference record to 5-9, good enough for a fifth place tie with Portland in the WCC standings.
  • As a team, the Broncos hit .274 and collected 10 blocks against the Dons.
  • Santa Clara was led by sophomores Kayla Lommori and All-WCC Honorable Mention Kaleigh Durket, who each recorded 16 kills apiece. All-WCC First Team member Taylor Schmidt added eight kills against the Dons. Schmidt ended the season ranked third in the conference in hitting percentage with 228 total kills and a .338 clip.
  • Durket was joined by sophomore middle blocker Dana Knudsen on the Honorable Mention list. Durket compiled the third most kills in the WCC with 341 this season. Knudsen compiled a total 277 kills this season and led the Broncos in blocks with 97.

NCAA Releases Latest Women's Volleyball RPI
The NCAA released its latest RPI (Rating Percentage Index), which included games as of November 22, 2010, measuring the of strength of schedule of all 328 Division I teams across the nation. Below is where the WCC schools fall in this week's report.

WCC Player of the Week
Chloe Ferrari, San Diego, F, MH
Freshman middle hitter Chloe Ferrari helped lead USD to its second best record in program history in WCC matches at 13-1, and helped lead USD to the WCC Championship outright, as she racked up 29 kills (3.62 kps), hit .511, and had 9 blocks. In the loss to Pepperdine on Thursday, Ferrari had 13 kills on 24 swings to post a .375 attack percentage, while also recording six blocks. Then in Saturday's sweep over LMU, Ferrari had 16 kills on 21 swings, while only committing two errors to post a .667 attack percentage.

WCC October Volleyball Player of the Month
Ali Troost, San Diego, SR, MB
Senior right side Ali Troost helped lead USD to a perfect 9-0 record and a perfect 8-0 record to open up WCC play. This marks the fourth time in program history that the Toreros have opened the WCC season 8-0. Troost paced the Toreros offense with 137 kills, hit for a .377 clip, recorded 61 digs and 14 blocks. Troost also recorded two double-doubles this month, as she had 14 kills and 10 digs in a win over Portland (10/2), and 15 kills and 13 digs against Saint Mary's (10/9). She racked up a season-high 28 kills in a win against Utah and recorded 25 kills in a win against LMU.

WCC Raises Breast Cancer Awareness in Communities
This past October, also known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, seven of the eight WCC volleyball teams came together to raise over $11,400 for the Side-Out Foundation and local breast cancer research groups as part of the nationwide effort to increase breast cancer awareness and to fund current and future research and education.
