PROVO, Utah -- Hira Naveed has a two-shot lead and the Pepperdine women's golf team has opened up an impressive five-stroke advantage thanks to a strong finish at Thursday's first round of the West Coast Conference Championships.
The No. 36 Waves shot a 3-over 291 at the par-72 Riverside Country Club, outdueling No. 27 BYU. Over the final three holes, the Waves' four scorers went 2-under while the Cougars were 4-over.

Play continues with the second round on Friday, with the leaders teeing off the 10th hole at 8:15 a.m. PT. The third and final round is Saturday. Thursday's tee times were pushed back an hour from the original start time due to concerns of morning frost on the course.
