#WCCCHAMPS DAY ONE RECAP
SANTEE, Calif. - No. 33 Pepperdine fired a 8-under 280 and leads Saint Mary's by two shots after the opening round of the 2018 West Coast Conference Championship at the Carlton Oaks Golf Club on Monday. No. 45 San Francisco and No. 50 Santa Clara are tied for third overall at 2-over 290, while Loyola Marymount and Gonzaga sit at 4-over on the par-72 course playing at 7,140 yards.
Perry Cohen of Saint Mary's leads the way at 6-under 66, followed by Pepperdine's Joshua McCarthy at 4-under 68. San Diego's Dalton Hankamer is third at 3-under 69. Three Waves and two Gaels concluded the first 18 in the top-10 on the individual leaderboard.
Cohen turned in a bogey free round and was neck and neck on the individual leaderboard with McCarthy, who had three birdies on the front nine and three on the back nine and was flawless until a double-bogey on 18.
No fewer than five teams made the turn at par or better, but wind created some havoc on the back nine as the Waves and Gaels were the only squads to post red team numbers. Fifteen student-athletes posted rounds at par or better with 11 at 1-under or better.
Round one featured four eagles - two by Dons (Toby Briggs & Alex Chin). Cohen and McCarthy led the field with six birdies, while five carded five apiece.
Round two gets underway Tuesday, April 17. The men will be going off No. 10 tee starting at 7:50 a.m. Live results will be available via GolfStat.com .
