SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Gonzaga senior Sophie Whittle was named the 2019 West Coast Conference Player of the Year, San Diego’s Solymar Colling was named the WCC Freshmen of the Year, and San Diego head coach Sherri Stephens was selected as the WCC Coach of the Year, the conference office announced Wednesday.

A total of 18 singles student-athletes, and eight doubles teams were recognized as All-Conference honorees. All three individual awards - along with the All-West Coast Conference Teams - were voted on by the league's 10 head coaches.

Whittle caps her record-breaking year by becoming the first Gonzaga Bulldog to be named the WCC Women’s Tennis Player of the Year. After beginning the year as the ITA All-American Champion and becoming the first Bulldog to earn the No. 1 ranking in the country by the ITA, Whittle set program records for all-time singles wins as well as all-time singles wins in a season with her 27-6 overall record. She went 6-1 in conference play at the top of the lineup and was leading in the remaining two matches before going unfinished.

Colling is the first Torero to earn the top freshman honor since Samantha Mouly earned the award in the 2007 season. The freshman went a perfect 7-0 at the top of the lineup to lead San Diego to second in the WCC standings. She finished her first regular season of collegiate tennis with a 27-7 overall and 14-4 dual record, including a pair of top-25 wins against 11th-ranked Whittle of Gonzaga and 21st-ranked Michaela Gordon of Stanford.

Stephens earns her fourth-career WCC Coach of the Year honor and first since 2012 after leading the Toreros to second-place in the WCC standings this year with an 8-1 record. The second-place finish is the team’s best regular-season finish since the conference began round-robin play in 2012. San Diego posted four 4-0 sweeps in conference play to solidify the No. 2 seed and finished 2019 with a 17-3 dual record.

The women's teams will kick off the WCC tennis championships on Thursday, April 25 with the first serve at 10 a.m.
