No. 2 San Diego Holds Off No. 3 Washington State, 4-2

USD will advance to Saturday's championship match

FAIRFIELD, Calif. - No. 2 San Diego beat No. 3 seed Washington State, 4-2, in the semifinals of the West Coast Conference Women's Tennis Tournament at the Green Valley Country Club in Fairfield, Calif.

USD won the doubles point despite the Cougars putting up a strong fight. The Toreros won the first match on the second court, 6-3, while the first and third matches were tough back-and-forth battles. The Toreros won the doubles point on court three, 7-5. 

USD jumped out to a 3-0 led after Anni Moll won on court six, 6-1, 6-4, followed by Hannah Read on court three, 7-6, 6-4. 

The Cougars got back into the mix when Maxine Murphy picked up her second win of the tournament on court two, 7-6, 6-4. Shortly after, Eva Alvarez Sande won a second set tiebreaker to extend the match to the final three matches. 

After dropped her first set, Yura Nakagawa came storming back to win on court four, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, cutting the Cougar deficit down to one. 

While Alvarez Sande battled on court one, Maria Shmakova clinched the match for the Toreros on court five, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. 

With the win, the Toreros will advance to Saturday's championship match at 2 p.m. against No. 1 Pepperdine.
