SAN MATEO, Calif. – With the 2020-21 regular season in the books and the 2021 NCAA Postseason starting this weekend, the West Coast Conference is unveiling its All-WCC teams and major individual honors to celebrate the accomplishments of the past year. Each All-WCC team and all major individual honors were voted on solely by WCC head coaches.
August Holmgren captured WCC Player of the Year honors after turning in another standout season for the Toreros. The WCC’s highest-rated singles player at No. 77, Holmgren posted a record of 14-3, highlighted by a win against preseason No. 1 Daniel Cukierman of USC. Holmgren is set to make his third NCAA appearance after earning a berth in the 2021 NCAA Men’s Singles Championships. Holmgren also competed for a singles title in 2018 and played in the 20219 doubles event with former Torero
Joel Gamerov.
Holmgren is the fourth Torero to earn WCC Player of the Year honors and the first since Gui Osorio accomplished the feat in 2019. The junior is a three-time All-WCC First Team selection and teamed with
David Norfeldt to capture first team doubles honors for the third straight season.
Guy Den Ouden becomes the sixth Wave to capture WCC Freshman of the Year honors and the first since Sebastian Fanselow did so in 2010. Den Ouden posted a sizzling 15-3 overall record at the No. 1 (10-2) and No. 2 (5-1) singles spots and at one point rattled off 11 straight victories. Den Ouden paired with
Adrian Oetzbach to go 9-3 at No. 1 doubles and the duo captured All-WCC First Team Doubles recognition.
Adam Schaechterle guided the No. 28 Waves back to the top of the WCC standings in his third season as head coach in Malibu. Schaechterle directed Pepperdine to a 15-6 overall record, highlighted by a 4-3 upset triumph at No. 8 USC and then steamrolled through the WCC slate at an unblemished 8-0. The Waves captured their conference-best 44th WCC regular season championship and first since 2013.
Pepperdine opens the 2021 NCAA Men’s Team Championship Friday, May 7 against UC Santa Barbara. First serve will be at 10:00 a.m. at USC. The Waves/Gauchos winner will square off against the Grand Canyon vs. No. 8 Trojans winner on Saturday.
