WCC Announces 2022 Women's Tennis Awards

Fukuda voted Player of the Year, Broadus tabbed Freshman of the Year, Moreno named Coach of the Year

SAN MATEO, Calif. – Pepperdine’s Shiori Fukuda was voted the 2022 West Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Year, while her teammate, Savannah Broadus, was tabbed the WCC Freshman of the Year, and LMU head coach Agustin Moreno was honored as the WCC Coach of the Year as the Conference announced its annual postseason awards and All-WCC teams on Thursday.

Each of the all-conference teams and major awards were voted on solely by the WCC’s head coaches.

No. 8 Pepperdine, which captured the 2022 WCC regular season title and enters the WCC Women’s Tennis Tournament as the top seed, placed three on the All-WCC Singles First Team and two Waves doubles teams were on the All-WCC Doubles First Team.

Fukuda was voted the WCC Player of the Year after completing the regular season 28-9 and ranked No. 16 in the ITA Rankings. She guided the Waves to a perfect 7-0 record in conference play. Fukuda is 11-6 in dual matches, playing all her matches as the top spot for the Waves. The graduate student has been selected to the All-WCC Singles First Team in each of her two years with the Waves. This is Fukuda’s second conference player of the year honor, as she was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Year as a member of the Ohio State program in 2020 before she transferred to Pepperdine.

The Waves swept the two student-athlete major awards, as Broadus was named the WCC Freshman of the Year. She is 29-9 this season, including a perfect 6-0 in dual matches during conference play. Broadus has played between three and six in the lineup for the Waves during dual competition. Broadus was a Second Team All-WCC selection in singles, completing the regular season 14-5 in dual competition.

A year after not competing as a program due to the impact of COVID-19, Moreno has guided the LMU women’s tennis program to a No. 23 ITA ranking, an 18-2 overall record that includes an 8-1 mark in WCC play. The Lions earned the No. 2 seed in the WCC Women’s Tennis Tournament, and enter the conference tournament on a nine-match winning streak.

Pepperdine occupies three of the six spots on the All-WCC Singles First Team, as Fukuda is joined by fellow Waves Janice Tjen and Lisa Zaar. San Diego junior Solymar Colling, Mariia Kozyreva of Saint Mary’s, and LMU’s Veronika Miroshnichenko completed the All-WCC Singles First Team.

The Pepperdine duo of Victoria Flores and Zaar and the Waves doubles team of Broadus and Tjen gave the regular season champions two of the three teams on the Conference’s doubles
Jordan Harris and Mariia Kozyreva of Saint Mary’s were also All-WCC First Team Selections.
