SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Pepperdine’s Janice Tjen was voted the 2023 West Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Year, marking the third straight year that a Wave has earned the honor. San Diego head coach Nadia Abdala was honored as the WCC Coach of the Year and LMU's Anna Paradisi won Freshman of the Year.
Each of the all-conference teams and major awards were voted on solely by the WCC’s head coaches.
No. 7 Pepperdine, which captured the 2023 WCC regular season title and enters the WCC Women’s Tennis Tournament as the top seed, placed three on the All-WCC Singles First Team and one on the All-WCC Doubles First Team.
Tjen was voted the WCC Player of the Year after completing the regular season 28-9 and ranked No. 16 in the ITA Rankings. She guided the Waves to a perfect 7-0 record in conference play. Tjen is 22-8 in dual matches, playing the majority of her matches on the top court for the Waves. The 2022 ITA All-American also made the WCC All-Conference First Team in singles and doubles for the second straight year.
Paradisi helped LMU garner the No. 3 seed in this week's WCC Women's Tennis Tournament. She went 8-3 overall in dual matches this seaosn, including going 5-1 on the fifth court. She also went 8-3 in doubles.
First-year head coach Abdala had her Toreros on the brink of taking down Pepperdine in their regular-season meeting, but she still has USD in a prime position as the No. 2 seed in the WCC Tournament with a current ITA ranking of No. 30. The Toreros are 12-9 overall and 6-1 in Conference matches this season under Abdala's guidance.
Pepperdine occupies three of the six spots on the All-WCC Singles First Team, as Tjen is joined by fellow Waves Savannah Broadus and Lisa Zaar. San Diego's Solymar Colling, Yujia Huang of BYU, and LMU’s Veronika Miroshnichenko completed the All-WCC Singles First Team.
The Pepperdine duo of Tjen and Broadus were no surprise as all-conference first team honorees as the nation's leading doubles tandem for most of the season. Joining them on the first team were San Diego's Kailey Evans and Elizabeth Goldsmith and LMU's Miroshnichenko and Eva Marie Voracek.
