SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – After sweeping the West Coast Conference competition during the regular season to win the 2024 WCC regular season championship, No. 6 Pepperdine also swept the major awards as the WCC announced the 2024 WCC Women's Tennis All-Conference awards on Wednesday. After previously winning Freshman of the Year in 2022, Savannah Broadus was named the Player of the Year, while her head coach Per Nilsson won Coach of the Year and her teammate Jasmine Conway won Freshman of the Year.
Each of the all-conference teams and major awards were voted on solely by the WCC’s head coaches. There was an additional all-conference second team honoree in singles and doubles due to a tie in voting.
Broadus was voted the WCC Player of the Year after completing the regular season 25-10 in singles and ranked No. 14 in the ITA Rankings. She guided the Waves once again to a perfect 7-0 record in conference play. Broadus also went 27-2 in doubles with her partner Janice Tjen. They are ranked No. 2 in the nation right now. This marks the fourth straight year that a Wave has won the award.
Conway adds to the Waves' trophy case this year with giving Pepperdine its third WCC Freshman of the Year award in the last four years. Broadus last won the award for the Waves in 2022. Conway finished 10-8 in singles this year. She and her doubles teammate Lisa Zaar went 12-7 in doubles, as well.
This award marks the sixth time that Nilsson has won Coach of the Year for the Waves. After another perfect record in Conference play, Nilsson has the Waves in prime position as the No. 1 seed for another WCC Tournament Championship run this week. He won the award four years in a row from 2015-18. The Waves have won the past nine consecutive WCC tournament titles.
Pepperdine occupies three of the six spots on the All-WCC Singles First Team, as Broadus is joined by fellow Waves Janice Tjen and Lisa Zaar for the second straight year. Tjen and Zaar picked up all-conference accolades for the third straight year. San Diego's Claudia De Las Heras and Elizabeth Goldsmith, and Portland's Iva Zelic completed the All-WCC Singles First Team.
The Pepperdine duo of Tjen and Broadus were no surprise as all-conference first team honorees as the nation's No. 2 ranked doubles tandem for most of the season. Joining them on the first team were their teammartes Zaar and Conway along with the Portland tandem of Zelic and Sally Pethybridge.
Goldsmith and Klara Kosan of Pacific earned all-conference recognition for the third straight season, and this marked two years in a row for De Las Heras. This is also the second time that Zelic has earned all-conference honors.
