West Coast Conference Volleyball Round Up - Oct. 15

San Diego remains in first place

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - All alone in first place, in the West Coast Conference Volleyball standings, San Diego sits at 6-0 in league play after defeating Oregon State last weekend in a battle for first place. 

The Beavers remain near the top of the standings, tied for second place with Washington State at 5-1.

This Week
Contests this week start on Thursday night. San Diego finds itself once again in another pivotal matchup as the Toreros head to Pullman to face Washington State. Pepperdine and Portland look to remain in the top half of the standings with matchups against Seattle U and San Francisco, respectively. Gonzaga hosts LMU, as well. 

On Saturday, five contests are on the slate with USD continuing its tour of the Pacific Northwest at Seattle U, while Washington State hosts LMU. Pepperdine and Portland square off in Portland as two of the league's current 3-2 teams look to move up the standings. Gonzaga completes its homestand against Saint Mary's and Pacific hosts Santa Clara. 

The weekend's slate closes on Sunday with Oregon State hosting San Francisco.  

Last Week
It was a big week for Saint Mary's as the Gaels garnered their first two conference wins of the season, taking down Pacific on the road in five sets and Santa Clara at home in five sets. Another five-set showdown featured San Diego holding on to first place with a victory at home over Oregon State. Prior to their matchup, USD and OSU started the week with sweeps on Thursday.  

Stat Leaders
Pepperdine and Washington State both rank in the top 30 in the country in aces per set with the Waves checking in at No. 27 and the Cougars at No. 29. 

Individually, WSU's Lucie Blazkova is No. 22 in hitting percentage (.419) and USD's Nemo Beach is tied for No. 20 in points (317.5). Beach's 287 kills currently pace the West Coast Conference, as well. 

Gonzaga's Sjakkie Donkers paces the league in kills per set at 4.04.
