SAN DIEGO - No 1. seed San Diego defeated No. 2 seed Pepperdine, 4-2, in the championship match of the West Coast Conference Men's Tennis Tournament at the Aztec Tennis Complex on the San Diego State campus.
USD has now won nine of the last 10 tournament titles and the last two in a row.
The doubles point went to the Waves with wins on courts two and three. Maxi Homberg and Linus Carlsson Halldin were victorious, 6-4, and Aleksa Pisaric and Lasse Poerter won, 6-2, to claim the doubles point.
In singles, USD evened the team score quickly at 1-1 when Stian Klassen won in straight sets in the No. 3 court, 6-3, 6-4. Nationally third-ranked Oliver Tarvet gave the Toreros the lead with his straight-set win over Edward Winter, 6-4, 6-4.
After dropping the first set to Homberg, 6-4, Savriyan Danilov rebounded to take the next two sets, 7-5 and 6-0 to put the Toreros in the driver's seat for another Conference championship. Lasse Poertner got one back for the Waves with a win on the No. 4 court, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1.
Neo Niedner clinched the victory and the championship for USD on the No. 5 court, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
The Toreros have earned the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Selection Show will air on Monday at 2:30 p.m. PT.
