SAN BRUNO, Calif. - For the first time in program history, San Diego will host as the No. 6 seed in the 2025 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship as announced on Monday. Pepperdine also heard its name called in the field, as well. The Waves will face Alabama in the Stanford regional, while the Toreros will face UC Irvine on the home courts.
If the Toreros advance, they will face the winner of Arizona State and USC. If the Waves beat the Crimson Tide, they will face the winner of host Stanford and New Mexico.
At last weekend’s West Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament, No. 1 seed San Diego beat No. 2 seed Pepperdine, 4-2, to be crowned 2025 tournament champions, claiming nine of the last 10 WCC tournament titles.
This is the fourth straight year multiple WCC men’s tennis programs earned NCAA bids. San Diego and Pepperdine represented the Conference in the NCAA Tournament the past three seasons, as well. As a top-eight seed, USD would also host in the super regionals if the Toreros advance to the third round.
Boasting a 24-3 overall record and a perfect 7-0 record in conference matches, USD enters the NCAA Tournament enjoying a 10-match winning streak. USD and UC Irvine met in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament with the Toreros winning, 4-0. These teams are 1-1 all-time in the NCAA Tournament with UC Irvine winning in the 1989 tournament.
Pepperdine will travel up the state to the Bay Area for the Stanford regional. The Waves finished the regular season 16-10 overall and have won four of their last six. Pepperdine is 5-4 all-time vs. Alabama with the last victory taking place in 2011. Stanford was also the site when Pepperdine won the 2006 national championship.
The first two rounds will take place on May 2 and 4. The winner of each site advances to super-regional competition May 9 and 11. Each super-regional site will feature two teams playing a single-elimination format. The super-regional winners advance to Waco, Texas, where the eight teams will compete for the national championship from May 16-18.
In addition to Pepperdine, Saint Mary's is set to compete in the UTR Sports National Invitational Tournament from May 7-9 in Rome, Georgia.
