No. 4 LMU Holds Off No. 5 Portland, 4-3

LMU will play San Diego on Friday

FAIRFIELD, Calif. - No. 4 seed LMU rebounded after losing the doubles point and held off No. 5 seed Portland, 4-3, in the quarterfinals of the West Coast Conference Men's Tennis Tournament at the Green Valley Country Club in Fairfield, Calif.

Portland got off to a hot start taking the doubles point. On the No. 1 court, Nikola Keremedchiev and Cade Fernando topped Cesar Cruz and Emil Kindhult from LMU, 7-6. The Lions won on the second court, but the Pilots earned the point with Stefan Skobelev and Tannor Binder beating Cyrus Ahmad and Darius Tamaddon, 6-3. 

The Lions quickly rebounded on the top two courts in singles. On the No. 1 court, Max Wuelfing topped Keremedchiev in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. On the second court, Cruz beat Fernando, 6-1, 6-1. 

Portland rebounded with wins on the third and fourth courts. Tom Garcia won on court three and Skobelev earned his second win of the day on court four. 

After Tristan Messerli put the Lions in contention to win on the sixth court, 6-4, 6-1, Ahmad clinched the match victory on the No. 5 court, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. 

With the win, the will play No. 1 seed San Diego Friday at 9 a.m. in the semifinals.
