PAST GILLERAN WCC SCHOLAR-ATHLETE WINNERS
SAN BRUNO, Calif. – At the conclusion of each academic year, the West Coast Conference announces its major individual year-end honors as a celebration of the best and brightest to represent the Conference and its member institutions.
Today, the West Coast Conference is pleased to announce the 2020 Mike Gilleran WCC Scholar-Athletes of the Year as voted on by the 10 conference members.
Saint Mary’s men’s soccer student-athlete Anders Engebretsen is the fourth Gael to capture the award since 2011. Mary Lake is the fourth BYU student-athlete to collect the honor and is the third Cougar volleyball All-American to do so.
The Mike Gilleran Scholar-Athlete of the Year is selected by a vote of the WCC's Executive Council to recognize the finest accomplishments in athletics, academics and community service by individuals who have completed their collegiate eligibility. The award is named in honor of the conference's first full-time commissioner, Mike Gilleran.
ANDERS ENGEBRETSEN, SAINT MARY’S, MEN'S SOCCER
Engebretsen held a 3.69 GPA in Economics and pulled off an exceptionally rare feat capturing First Team All-American and First Team Academic All-American honors as a senior in Moraga. The 2019 WCC co-Player of the Year, Engebretsen scored 16 goals with eight assists in his final collegiate campaign and ranked fourth among Division I points leaders with 40. For his career, the two-time WCC First Team selection and two-time WCC All-Academic pick scored 32 goals with 18 assists for 82 points. After leading the Gaels to their second straight WCC Championship in 2019 and a No. 6 national ranking, Engebretsen was selected in the fourth round of the 2020 MLS SuperDraft.
MARY LAKE, BYU, VOLLEYBALL
One of the most accomplished student-athletes in BYU volleyball history, Lake carried a 3.68 GPA as an Accounting major and pursued a Master’s degree. A three-time All-American, Lake wrapped up her collegiate career ranked atop the program’s digs list (fourth in WCC history) and competed for the US Senior Women’s National Team, helping the squad secure a spot in the Summer Olympics. During her time in Provo, BYU posted an overall record of 116-14, 66-6 in WCC play advancing to three straight Sweet-16 appearances and the 2018 Final Four. A three-time WCC All-Academic first team choice and a two-time Academic All-District pick, Lake helped BYU achieve a No. 1 national ranking in 2018 – the first in WCC volleyball history.
