West Coast Conference splashes into conference play

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – West Coast Conference Men's Water Polo enters the seventh week of the regular season this week. With conference matchups officially taking place in the pool last weekend, San José State and Santa Clara currently lead the Conference with 1-0 records, respectively, while Pacific sits at 1-1. California Baptist and Pepperdine will both start conference action this week while Air Force and LMU sit at 0-1. 

In The Rankings
San José State ranks seventh in the country while Pepperdine sits eighth. LMU (T-10th), Santa Clara (T-13th), California Baptist (No. 15) and Pacific (No. 18) round out the West Coast Conference's ranked squads entering this week's play. 

This Week
The week starts off with another pivotal conference battle with Pepperdine traveling to Riverside, Calif., to take on California Baptist on Thursday. The two faced off against each other in the Overnght MPSF Tournament and the Waves beating the Lancers 10-17 in that contest, but this will be the first official conference match between the two this season. 
 
Pepperdine will end the week at home against No. 13 Princeton on Sunday, while California Baptist will finish its week on Sunday in Colorado, facing off against conference foe Air Force. 
 
In other conference action, San José State travels to Stockton on Saturday for a noon match against Pacific.
 
Also on Saturday at noon, Santa Clara will host No. 10 Long Beach State.

Last Week
In the first West Coast Conference Men’s Water Polo conference contest of the season, Pacific defeated Air Force 21-11. In the Tigers' only other match of the weekend, they traveled down to Santa Clara to take on the Broncos, losing a close to Santa Clara 13-11. 
 
Air Force competed at the Gary Troyer Invitational, splitting its two matches of the day. The Falcons won the first game against Division III Chapman, claiming a 20-9 victory. The Falcons finished their California trip by defeating Redlands 15-11. 
 
LMU and San José State were the only other West Coast Conference teams to play a conference foe last week. The Spartans hosted the Lions and edged out a 16-13 victory. The two programs stayed in San José on Saturday for the BW Invitational. LMU swept its two matchups, winning a tight 10-9 contest against No. 16 UC Santa Barbara and then getting the job done 16-12 against No. 8 UC Davis. San José State split its matches against the same two opponents, gaining a 9-8 victory against the Aggies and then losing a close one, 13-12, against the Gauchos. 
 
California Baptist spent the weekend at the Gary Troyer Invitational, winning all four matches over Friday and Saturday. On the first day, the Lancers defeated Pomoa-Pitzer 15-7 followed by McKendree 21-9. On the second day of the invitational, California Baptist defeated Mount St. Mary’s 20-11 and then finished the weekend off with a narrow 12-11 victory against Cal State Fullerton. 

In Pepperdine's lone game of the weekend on Friday, the Waves traveled to Long Beach to take on No. 9 Long Beach State, winning the thrilling sudden death overtime match 17-16.
